Appreciating the origins and history of Poi:
LED balls commonly known as LED pois took inspiration from Māori poi. Although frivolous in comparison LED versions do give the opportunity for others to learn and therefore appreciate the innovative and resiliant aspects of Māori culture.
The Māori word Poi means both sphere and toss.
Poi originated with the indigenous Māori people of Aoteoroa. The first poi were made from harakeke (flax) bags made with raupō (bulrush) called kii. It's said the stuffing would have been dog fur, feathers or plant fibres.
Māori fighting warriors swung large stones inside kii to make their arms and wrists supple and strong and to test reactions.
These taonga (treasures) were also used prolifically by early wāhine (Māori women) in games and physical exercises to sharpen reflexes, increase flexibility and improve coordination.
The creation of a taonga so beautiful, with multiple important purposes was truly ingenious.
Te Papa care for one of the few original pois left. The craftsmanship is spectacular - view via this link: https://collections.tepapa.govt.nz/object/65427
Today Poi are used in Kapa haka and provide a means of self expression and story telling.
We greatly appreciate and acknowledge Māoris ingenuity and creativity, their revered history and their generosity in sharing it. It is a privilege.
Portion of sale profits goes to local Māori hapori.
